Sunflower Lecithin is a natural fat emulsifier that can help to reduce the "stickiness" of the milk and deter fats from clumping together. Once milk gets backed up in the breast, it can quickly become engorged, and if left untreated, develop into the dreaded mastitis. Lecithin helps the fat slide of the milk sinuses to loosen existing fatty clogs and improve milk flow.  According to Dr Jack Newman, "Lecithin is a food supplement that seems to help prevent blocked ducts. It may do this by decreasing the viscosity of the milk by increasing the percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the milk." Lecithin can be taken in normal dose as a preventative. To combat plugged ducts, the recommended dosage is 3600-4800 mg lecithin per day, or 1 capsule (1200 milligram) 3-4 times per day. After a week or two with no blockage, mom can reduce the dosage by one capsule. If there is no blockage within another 2 weeks she can reduce it again by one. Mom may need to continue taking 1-2 capsules per day if stopping the lecithin leads to additional plugged ducts or one capsule per day as a preventative measure.
